The brain uses 10 watts of power to do up to 20 quadrillion "calculations" (synaptic firings), 1 million times more than a modern computer. 10 watts is about 300 kcal/day. So the human computer requires 3 bananas worth of power to operate. PS: These are all quick estimates.

Why does the brain consume 50% of our energy even though it weighs 2% of the bodymass? Because it's in control and influences where valuable resources end up in our body. PS: this is also the same reason how CEOs pay themselves significantly more than their employees.
